Local context
Bo Brooks Restaurant has been serving generations of seafood lovers since it was founded in 1964 by Howard Bo Brooks and two partners. Originally located in the East Baltimore neighborhood of Gardenville, the early steam room was simple—two burners and newspaper used to cover the tables—yet the focus on standout steamed crabs helped the restaurant build a strong local following. Over the years, Bo Brooks has remained consistent in spirit and style, earning a reputation in Baltimore for excellent steamed crabs and seafood. In June 2000, Bo Brooks opened at its new location in Canton, during a period when the Baltimore waterfront was beginning to experience a major rebirth. While the Gardenville location no longer exists, the restaurant’s customers can expect the same food service and atmosphere that helped define the original experience. Bo Brooks has had only three owners, and it has been owned by the family of Herman Hannan since 1985. The name has endured through changes in ownership because of its well-known reputation for the best crabs and seafood in Baltimore. For diners searching in the Tampa, Florida area for a restaurant known for classic steamed crabs and seafood tradition, Bo Brooks offers an established, family-rooted dining legacy with a longtime reputation to match.
